Horoki for Lunch

I've been away in Hong Kong and Vietnam and just got back last Monday... A short trip the day after I accepted my new job offer...

I'm now working on the corner of Spring and Lonsdale in the city... and I've never worked in this side of the city before and it's fabulous! So close to Chinatown, and so close to Horoki! I ventured down Lt Collins Street from this side of town and already noted a few restaurants and cafes that I would like to try for lunch.

I've never been to Horoki for lunch so I didn't know how the menu worked... But it's like this. There is a daily lunch special menu ($12.90) where you can order 3 items from the menu. It comes with ciabatta bread or rice. I opted for the hamburger steak in juicy tomato and onion sauce, tuna and silken tofu salad, salmon croquette and rice. The food came after 10 minutes, beautifully laid out on hand-made Japanese ceramic. I loved and ate everything. I also ordered hot apple tea (which is from Lepicier) which was absolutely delicious.

Unfortunately, I paid too quickly and the waitress had to chase me down the street because I forgot to pay for my tea! Hahaha. First time ever that has happened. Already looking forward to going there with Hubby next week! YUMMMM!

I've been there for dinner twice and it was fantastic both times. I've tried most of the menu and the flavours are so unique and different from other Japanese places. The weird combinations really work though. If you go for dinner next time, I definitely recommend the Daikon Sashimi salad (a must have I think), the Beef Tartar and the Fried Rice.

One thing to keep in mind though.
Do stay away from their roast duck dish in their dinner menu. Utter disappointment next to so many awesome dishes, I'm afraid. I would only eat roast duck from Rock Kung restaurant in Glen Waverley.
Btw, I do second your Daikon Sashimi salad thanh!
Also, try their seared nigiri sushi. I find it better than blow-torched version ala Shira Nui...

Hi Thanh, thanks for the tip! I will try that!

"Anonymous" - What's the address for Rock Kung?!

Hmm...you haven't joined the ranks at Casselden Place, eh?

Horoki is a local for me as well, and I love his set lunch.

Hi Mellie. Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure what you meant by joining the ranks. Actually I have been to the restaurants (i.e. Horoki, Little Malaysia, Laksa Me, and the Japanese restaurant next to Horoki can'r remember the name) in Casselden Place but usually for dinner. I can't believe Fast Eddy is gone!?!?!

I've just found out one bad thing about Horoki at lunchtime... you end up leaving with exhaust and food smell on your clothing... especially if you sit near the stove. Only tables please.
